CHARACTER INFO
Character: Ren Amamiya
Canon: Persona 5: Royal (canon point is after the sequel, Persona 5: Strikers)
Age: 17ish, almost 18
Background Information: wiki link
Personality:
Ren is, at first glance, a normal teenager... which is exactly what he wants people to think. For the most part he was normal up until his game canon happened-- he was a quiet but normal guy until he tried to defend a woman being assaulted, got accused of assault himself and arrested, then sent off to Tokyo to live with a stranger while on probation where one step out of line would get him sent to juvie.
Oh, and all the supernatural stuff that happened after that.
Someone's first impression would be that he's plain, though. Maybe they can see his attractive features that he purposefully tries to hide under his (fake) glasses and bad posture and quiet attitude, but for the most part he blends into the crowd easily. It's not until you get to know him more that you see his other traits: a penchant for showing off (along with the cockiness and pride one would connect with such a thing), a love of dramatics, a bad (or good, depending on your own) sense of humor, and a major commitment to The Bit.
Ren is selfish in a lot of ways, but for the most part he is obsessed with helping other people. Others have theorized that this is, in part, due to how he himself did not receive help when he needed it most, and that's likely true. His most noticeable trait is just how nosy and willing to get in everyone's business he is, especially if there's a problem he thinks he can help with. Occasionally he goes beyond what the person he's helping might want, and is completely willing to bend any other rules and laws and morals to do so which can cause problems and puts him firmly in the morally great area, but... At it's heart, it at least comes from a good place.
His experiences and the experiences of those around him have finely honed his sense of justice, and there's not much he wouldn't do to see it through. He hates seeing what he sees as injustices in the world and will do whatever he can to try and fix them-- even to his own detriment. In this sense he's incredibly goal-driven and ready to do anything he can to see things through.
He's reasonably clever and has a talent for being sneaky and quiet, and loves reading and hearing fictional stories in particular. He loves cooking, especially for his friends, and has become a horrible coffee snob thanks to his cafe-owning guardian. As far as flaws go... his pride and cockiness can also definitely get him in trouble, as well as said selfishness; he's eager to hold onto the people he cares about however he can, and there's a lot he'd be willing to throw away even to the extent of hurting other people to be able to do so. His nosiness is also often a problem (even if it also ends up helping sometimes), and he can often be too indifferent or unserious (and comedic or snarky) about problems. Certainly not... everyone is willing to put up with that kind of personality, of course, and he can take things a little too far and seems to enjoy messing with people a little for the sake of messing with them.
He's also been described as having a "gambler's spirit" which... can certainly help in his favor, but means he's prone to trying things with high risk, high reward, which can come back and bite him in the ass easily.
He's constantly walking the line between trying to blend in and not show too much and rebelling however he can against things he finds unfair, which gives him a fun if sometimes difficult dichotomy. His biggest regrets are the people he couldn't help the way he wanted to, though; he has explicitly stated that he does not regret helping, even when it hurt himself.
As far as interesting facts go... The biggest thing, other than being the leader of a vigilante group that brainwashes awful people into actually feeling guilt for their actions, would be the way he tries to blend in and hide. He wears fake glasses to make himself look less threatening and to hide his eyes (and the emotions or feelings and expressions someone could see in them), wears his school uniform completely to the letter (unlike his friends who have their own unique additions), and stands and walks with a slouch and his hands in his pockets almost constantly. It makes sense for someone accused of assault (with rumors about being a horrible, dangerous criminal always circling about him) to do these things, and is a fun character bit. And while almost everyone changes their personality a little bit/plays up or down certain parts of it to fit in better, Ren has this perfected to an art. His character theme calls him a "shapeshifter" and has imagery of an empty mirror, a cage of bones, etc. to showcase how he only see himself based on other people and that act, and how he isn't really sure of who he is underneath it. That's something he has to find for himself, and is an interesting take on a "silent" protagonist.
Abilities & Inventory:
dagger - Ren will be bringing with him one of the daggers he uses in the Metaverse in canon; as far as ability or nerfs go, the Metaverse increases your abilities based on your cognition, so he will be entering woefully less skilled with it than he normally is there and will need to actually train the hard way to get better at it.
persona - A summon that comes from the user's heart and will of rebellion, and in Ren's case: his relationship with other people. Ren is a wildcard, which means he can use more than one persona; he can make deals with them and they grow stronger based on his social links/relationships with people representing different tarot cards. Ren's original Persona is Arsene, a being capable of curse magic and physical attacks. I would love for him to eventually be able to recover other personas (perhaps depending on the relationships he makes in game, much as is done in his game canon), but would really like for him to only start with his OG Boy. Said OG Boy can also evolve into Raoul, who is very similar (curse and physical attacks etc) but also has a powerful sleep spell at his disposal. While in game this is just a... DLC persona that you pay for... it is technically Ren's ultimate persona, which all the other characters get based on their own personal development. So it'd be fun to have that as a goal for.
handful of lockpicks - He always has these on him and is pretty skilled at picking locks and being sneaky af.
school uniform - RIP, hope he gets some cooler clothes soon.

ARMADA SELECTION
Corsairs. Ren is a person with a strong sense of justice- but this has been mainly limited to his own sense of justice. He has no faith in organizations or things like that with specific rules to follow along with his own ideas, thanks to his own experiences and that of his friends. The start of his canon story is him trying to help someone and then being falsely accused of assault, arrested, and then put on probation and having his whole life turned upside down and his future in doubt thanks to it. He then ends up leading a group of vigilantes that go outside of the law to enact their own justice in morally grey ways. All this considered, he naturally fits in much more with the Corsairs where he would in theory have more freedom to take care of what he wants the way he wants.
Of course, this doesn't mean that he will necessarily get along well with every other corsair (depending on their own sense of justice, or lack thereof,) and is always a possibility for conflict.
(Also, on an aesthetic note, the guy would LOVE being a pirate. He ate UP the whole "gentleman thief" thing EAGERLY, this is just an extension of that in a way.)
